Exploring Luray Caverns, Virginia
Note: This post has been updated on May 10, 2022.
I remember being eight years old and taking a field trip to Luray Caverns, with my Girl Scout Troop, before camping in some nearby campsite for the weekend. I remember being in awe of this cavern, which temporarily took away the annoyance of having a sleepless weekend, worried about a spider crawling into my tent.
Fast forward 25 years, and I decided to head back there, to relive the fun part of that childhood memory only this time, adding a few sightseeing things along the way.
From Northern Virginia, it's about a 1 hr. and 45 min. drive to get there, and no matter which route you take, it's beautiful. About 45 minutes into the drive, you hit the peaceful and majestic scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains, taking you far away from the bustle of the city life.
The Caverns
All tours are done with a guide, so there's only one kind of ticket in that sense. It also includes the Car Museum (which is really fun to walk through) and Toy Town (which I didn't go through). I was thinking of doing the Garden Maze for an additional $9, but decided against it. Below are my pics from the tours. There are a few tips below this slide show, so make sure to read on!
Know Before You Go
We comfortable shoes that are NOT heels. It’s a lot of walking and a lot of inclines and declines.
The FUDGE SHOP - DO NOT MISS THE FUDGE SHOP. It sells some of the best fudge I've ever had.
They do have a cafe there, should you be hungry. But, why not stop at one of the many areas and have a picnic before you continue on?
